Artist Statement Looking back at the progression of my life it seems only natural and evident that my chosen medium- Clay- would be part of my life, following me through my travels and acting as a common denominator. Born in Algeria-North Africa, I have lived in Israel, France and Australia. Reconfiguration of my placement - coordinates is a constant, continuous practice being processed and echoed throughout my Ceramic - work. The landscape around me an integral part of my life allowing for an ongoing mapping-process to take place, to evolve and to be resolved. Coming to Australia was the catalyst in becoming an artist : exchanging my occupation as a farmer in the desert of Southern Israel with becoming a Ceramic artist. While my contemporary work echoes my new habitat here on the coastline of Bargara - Queensland, the influence of previous cultures is interlaced and manifested throughout. Markings and motives characteristic to Middle Eastern cultures resurface in the texture and colours of my Ceramics, while materials and techniques I use preserve and enhance the inherit distinctive qualities of the Clay. “In my pursuit to undress Ceramics from its functional wear, I have developed works that disengage from the Utilitarian connotation so often associated with Ceramics. My Ceramics seeks to engage the viewer's response and interaction. It is not about visual realism, it does not offer a usable nor functional object, but rather is a reflection; an emotive impression.” Ariella |
